Hunting / Trapping / TV-13 CWD panel discussion segment...
« on: November 20, 2017, 10:26:48 AM »
There were a couple of miss-statements, one quite glaring, during the MDNR's panel discussion on CWD.

Specifically, Terry Minzey, Wildlife Division Region 1 Chief, stated that the follow-up testing at the captive cervid facility near Big Rapids, Mi., where two deer from a sample submission of six heads tested positive initially, revealed no subsequent positive animals prior culling of the herd. Here is testimony from an Amish farmer that processes wild deer for area hunters, as well as some of the deer from the game farm, without a permit to operate as a meat processor i.e. no records available of who he processed deer for, or where they came from or where they were killed.

His testimony would indicate that five of the six heads the game farm owner initially submitted for testing, came from cervids killed in the surrounding area, indicating that there is no known specific site (focus) of contamination within the geography...kinda hard to contain an outbreak when you have no means of determining where it actually is!  Considering that no deer from the facility that were culled tested positive, I strongly doubt if this outbreak is contained, nor effectively managed in this geography of Michigan.

If you are interested, contact the MDNR Wildlife Division and ask for specifics on their timeline toward opening a season, since it will likely be in the U.P.

House of Representatives pass Resolution 154, requesting that the Michigan NRC act to place sandhill cranes on the game species list.  Should this happen, then the next step would be to request USFWS season structure recommendations.  USFWS has already approved seasons for Tennessee and Kentucky, within the Mississippi Flyway.

Sandhill cranes are more difficult to kill than a turkey, very wary, with excellent eyesight.

These are legal under the combo. license.  Josh's buck was killed earlier outside of Cedar, Mi in the permanent APR area in northwestern lower Michigan...

Several new scrapes and rubs near my blind sites when I packed-in bait. Marked change prior the week I took off to chase ducks during the snow and rain. Need to check the rut calculator!  Good luck, CB, I used to tent camp west of you over by Peavey Pond until four years ago. Good deer country, just ask the twenty slobs from Wisconsin that leave their garbage everywhere there now!  I thought that a visit from the MDNR would maybe turn them around...but nope!

Adam may not respond in a timely interval.  He is currently on a fire crew out in the Pacific Northwest right now.

They are good quality products, just damn pricey for injection molded stuff!

Good to see you are out fishing, since that means you came through the storm intact!  How are David and his family? Dave and Jean showed me pics of the storm damage around their winter place-pretty bleak.

With all the spring and summer rain, I expected a more widespread crop. A couple spots that produce well and are usually protected from Spring frosts were nearly empty; other spots where they were abundant had patches with nothing as well.
