Off Topic / Honey Bees
« on: December 30, 2016, 03:25:57 PM »
In keeping with my theme of trying every hobby out there at least for a while, I plan on trying to keep honey bees this spring.
Anyone have any advice/tips? I'm in the middle of winter research with books, videos, forums. I've talked with a few online places that ship bee packages, but has anyone ordered a package, or have any experience with any companies? Most of the sites that I talked to want you to put a deposit down, then when it gets closer to shipping time, pay the balance.
I plan on making a top bar hive, so dont' want to order a NUC.

Off Topic / Michigan bill 5996 horseshit
« on: November 04, 2016, 05:57:22 PM »
I apologize if someone posted this already, but i saw a facebook post saying this bill was introduced in reference to "assault rifle regulation act". I read one website that said this bill was effectivley killed, but just goes to show what some people want...
Horseshit.....

http://www.legislature.mi.gov/documents/2015-2016/billintroduced/House/pdf/2016-HIB-5996.pdf

Here are some nuggets from this bill:
One part was that if you didn't turn in your horrible assault rifle, the state police could inspect to ensure gun was locked up "once per year".

Registration with state police, then annual registration renewals after that.
Once registered, the owner would have to update their registration every year and could only possess it in working order at shooting ranges or their own property, with the transport to and from being unloaded and in a secured container.

South Shore Fishing Association / Veterans fishing day
« on: June 06, 2016, 12:44:06 PM »
The other day I was at the VA hospital in iron mountain and while waiting for my next appointment I overheard one of the VA reps telling a veteran about the veteran fishing day that the SSFA puts on in Marquette. He said it was awesome and for all types of vets, he said he went last year and loved it,, he was telling the guy that they clean the fish for you, it was all inclusive, etc...
Just thought it was neat to hear some people talking about how great and appreciated it was.

Good job.

Walleye / Walleye tournament in escanaba this weekend
« on: May 20, 2016, 10:03:33 AM »
Has anyone heard how the pro's have been doing pre-fishing?
I can't understand why the tournament would come to town the week of the walleye opener, i thought it was usually mid summer to get people in town. Maybe this was the only time the circuit could make it schedule wise?
Just seems like an odd time.

Gun Talk / Late Spring Gift
« on: April 15, 2016, 04:02:55 PM »
As a late spring gift, I picked up a Ruger Charger today.
I also ordered a cheap BSA pistol scope, but when I took it out of the box, the scope somehow has a fingerprint inside of the scope glass.lol
I need to send that back, so I threw a cheap red-dot on it and was hitting the small spinner target (~2") at 40 yards, plenty good for chipmunks until I get a pistol scope.
I've never really looked into pistol scopes,  but was surprised to see something with 14" of eye relief.

I've been ordering my last few guns from J's Sport Supply in Powers, Jeanette has been awesome with both fast shipping (usually 2 - 3 days) and the price on any gun is usually $50 - $100 cheaper than anywhere else close to me. I usually find the gun I'm looking for on Davidson's Gallery of Guns (http://www.galleryofguns.com) and then do a quote and she is always the cheapest, other than wilderness sports in Ishpeming. She then get's me the price at Davidson's, or can sometimes even beat that with another distributor. I like that Davidson's has their own lifetime guarantee on the guns bought through them, i'm not sure how great the warranty would be if i needed it, but hope for the best.

Off Topic / Got my mink back
« on: January 27, 2016, 07:35:25 PM »
Last spring, i had two or three of my pet ducks get killed, whatever killed them ate the throat out.
I put the dead ducks where they were and the next morning leaving for work, i saw one of the dead ducks being pulled across the front yard.
I grabbed my .22 pistol and shot, then i saw an animal cartwheeling.
I went over to it and it was a mink, he had a pot belly and a face full of blood.
Anyways, i brought him to brian lauscher in gladstone to get mounted and gowt him back today.
I like the mount, and it has a story behind it.

Off Topic / Donations to Defray Upangler Server Rental annual cost.
« on: January 21, 2016, 07:18:11 PM »
If anyone would like to donate to the website to help defray the cost of server rental and domain name registrations, i have changed it so you can just click the link at the top of the upangler.com/forums page and you should see a yellow oval that says donate. This will bring you to Paypal where you can make a donation. This link below will also bring you to the same spot.

https://www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_s-xclick&hosted_button_id=TVDDTQ984MWJS

The server rental for upangler.com and southshorefishing.com costs $180 per year for server rental and backups. The domain names cost $10 each ($20) total.
IF anyone would like to donate to defray these costs, it would be greatly appreciated. I am not trying to make any money, i'm just trying to cover server costs to make this "Project" fairly self sufficient. Any money gathered from donations above the amount required just goes into an account for next years server rental.

If you make a donation and would like a Upangler Decal (big for boat, smaller for vehicle) just let me know in the note of the donation.
If you have any questions I can help with, please let me know.
Thanks for any help,
Brett

Gun Talk / Late Christmas present 1911
« on: January 16, 2016, 05:41:54 PM »
I have been wanting a 1911 in .45 caliber for a long time, I have been watching Springfield Armory's webpage while they release their new pistols for 2016. I liked the looks and reviews of the "range officer" , but as my eyes get more "seasoned" I have a harder time picking up black on black sights. The new "range officer operator" comes with a fiber optic front sight. I ordered one from j's sport supply in powers, and it came in the next day.
I ran out and picked it up today, i'll clean it up tonight and hopefully get out shooting tomorrow.
It seems like a well built gun, comes with a heavy duty case, paddle holster, 2 mags, double mag holder, and two pieces of fiber to change the front sight if you would like.
My list of guns i want continues to get shorter.... Not go away, it just gets shorter. :)
I'll post a report after shooting it.

Off Topic / ISO a small piece of driftwood or......
« on: October 09, 2015, 01:33:07 PM »
Does anyone have a smaller piece of driftwood laying around? I am getting a mink mounted and am looking for a base to get it mounted it on. If anyone has any other ideas, i'd like to hear them.
My other thought was a cedar slab maybe 20" long with fake leaves and one side of a smaller 4 point rack on it.
Any suggestions? Anyone have or seen a neat mink mount setting?
