Lake Superior / MQT 8/12
« on: August 13, 2012, 07:44:32 PM »
Hit the water out of the Upper last night at 5:30.  Set lines halfway between White Rocks and Granite Island in 140 fow.  Glass calm with a few rollers left over from the earlier winds.  Trolled in and out of 180 up to to 220 and down to 90.  Picked up went 7 for 7 with 5 small lakers, one was the smallest of my life..a 8 inch monster.  Did to my surprise pick up a steelhead as I was setting down a SWR in 214 fow as the rigger was heading to 160 and hit at 120.  Flash of chrome later and we boated him.  Had a nice calm night on the water with some strange happenings to make it interesting.

Anyone got any recent reports after that year long heavy north wind we had?  I'll be down there Tuesday and Wednesday for work so I figured I haul the boat and hi the lake.

Appreciate any hints!

Boat and Tackle Setups / Fishfinder Settings
« on: July 21, 2012, 05:52:37 PM »
I have a Lowrance 520c GPS/Fishfinder combo.  I'm curious to what you all have your fish finder settings set at?  I have played with sensitivity, ping and transducer location but I don't seem to see the activity other see.  Actually I don't see anything other than the bottom, and that is usually the same color.  I mark zero fish, with and without the fish symbol setting.  I just don't see arches, down rigger balls, bait fish ball, nothing...just a blank screen and the bottom. sad()

Any tips/advice?  Is the unit too old?  Transducer not working properly?

Thanks in advance for some help!

Lake Michigan / Muskegon Tri Port Challenge
« on: July 16, 2012, 07:49:24 PM »
Hauled the new rig on a nice little test run to Muskegon for a family visit and the tourney.  Fishing on Thursday and Friday was amazing.  Could not keep poles in the water!  7 color and 5 color were hot as well as SWRs all with spoons (mostly moonshine).  Two kings came on Mike's Eyeflies Laker Taker behind a green spin doctor on braid dipsey.  Poles in the water by 6am and had our limit of by 8am!  Nice mix of 6 steelies and 9 kings on thursday morning with the biggest being a nice 16 pounder and the rest averaging 5-10lbs.  Fish all in 75-120 FOW and down about 30-60 Thursday night on the water by 6 and nothing until 9....and boy did they hit!  Two quads back to back!  Hauled in a 23lb king with and 18lb and 16lb and a nice 6 lb steelie.  Followed that up with another 18lb king, two 13lbs and a 10lb!  Cooler filled up fast with that!    Back in the poles went as things slowed a bit to just one at a time where we picked up two more decent kings and two steelies.  Friday morning was a similar limit with 7 steelies and 8 kings and off by 10am.  Several in the teens and 3 kings well over 15lbs!  We were looking good heading into tourney time!

Tournament time Saturday with 80 boats.  Winds picked up out of the west overnight as we headed out and immediately started struggling.  Bite died off and we could not find a good temp break in the water.  Hit a hot spot where we managed to find 7 quick hits over two hours but at 10 that died off.  Struggled to put three more in the boat and had our limit for the tourney for the day (catch 10 weigh 5) and we headed off at 1pm.  Sat at 26 on the leader board with a 105lb weigh in.  Sunday we hit the wall and couldn't find anything.  Winds were heavy out of the southwest and we tried everything from 300 fow to 60.  Got 6 mostly off leadcore (monkey puke and highline) and headed in with a prayer.  Ended the tournament in the 30's place-wise.

Talked to most boats and everyone struggled Sunday...some came back blank and other struggled to just get 5, most had less so by comparison we did quite well.

Most fishing the week had limits everyday until the weekend came and the wind messed with the bite

Over all a great weekend with family and some great and not so great fishing!  Felt good to slay some kings and steelies for a while!

Apparently the Best Chance Too, a fairly well known boat as the 'winningest boat on Lake Michigan' was caught trying to knock off small fish.  At fist they withdrew but now looks like a ban from the TT/333 could be coming.  Lot of discussion on GLA and many other forums if you search for it.

Interesting to say the least.  Hopefully I can find out more next during the Muskegon Tri Port Challenge...

Boat and Tackle Setups / Soft spots and boats...Semi Urgent!
« on: July 05, 2012, 10:21:56 PM »
Looking at a boat and it has a few soft spots in the floor.  cry()  The spots came from a severe leak in the engine compartment.  Engine was gone completely over and is nice and fine, but these soft spots were not and they scare me.  I took some time and felt them over with both my hands and feet and aside from the initial dip in the floor boards they are hard.  There are three of them where water came in.  I did not pull up the carpet.  The seller doesn't seem concerned about them as much as I am.  From what I can tell they are not an imminent problem but something I'll want to check out in full soon, something I won't be able to really do without buying.

I know what soft spots can lead to but don't know the full extent of what it cost to do a repair.  I believe it wouldn't be much in this case.
It's a good deal for the rig so this trigger might get pulled regardless but I'd still love some input!

I'm going back tomorrow for a second look...hence the semi urgent!

Thanks in advance!

My gas tank got stolen right off my boat last night!     Who ever took it probably is not using it on a boat as he/she cut the hose instead of just removing it from the kicker...would've taken 2 seconds to just take the whole thing...   Assuming they just want the gas but who knows.  I just got it at Dockside last summer too!   Some real A$$holes out there!   :kick: if I find em....

There were a few selling kicker tanks a while back but looks like most sold except for Frank's and I sent him a PM.

Those who were or are looking to sell feel free to let me know!

PS - If you stole my tank and are reading this please put it back.  Keep the gas if you want but they don't make that tank anymore and I'd like to have it back!

Boat and Tackle Setups / 'Other' Moonshine products
« on: May 26, 2012, 10:58:45 AM »
I'd like to pick up and try some of Moonshine's other products like their cow bells and casting spoons but I haven't seen them in the Mqt area.  Maybe I'm missing them but if anyone know's where to get them other than online let me know.

Also I know Bay View Bait & Tackle has them but I don't get down there much anymore working 7 days a week (sad seeing how I grew up in Gladstone...).

Thanks in advance!

Looking to buy a marine VHF radio.  Mine pooped out on me...well it won't send but it recieves, and my tech guy can't fix it.  Its got close to maybe 30 years on it so a replacement was coming soon anyway.  Don't need anything fancy.  Just want to be able to call.  Mounted unit too, I already have a handheld backup. Looking to keep it under $100.
