Off Topic / 1800 Mi. South

Good day out in the Gulf of Mexico. Unusual catch was a nice Blackfin Tuna, usually found in water deeper than the 65' we were in. Hurricanes and storms have the water mixed up. Nice mix of Spanish, King mackerel, asst. snappers, barracuda (great eating by the way), some bonitas for shark bait. Miss chasing eyes off the Ford R. at night this time of year. Have a Good One, Frank

Lake Michigan / Trip to Lake Michigan
« on: July 31, 2017, 12:21:54 PM »
Was invited to return north from Florida and fish the KD tourney with good friend Capt. Jim McDonald, Fin-addict Charters, Cedar River, Mi. We stayed on Washington Island, had some good fishing and good times with good friends. 24.6 was the biggest, several in the 19-20 range. Not sure where the big one ended up. Weather was a limiting factor in amount of time on the water and locations available, but had a great time.

Off Topic / Big Silver Fish

Not exactly a king or steelie, but shiny, big and pulled like a truck. Permit estimated about 33-34#. We also caught many snook, seatrout and jacks this day, but the permit was the highlight, caught offshore from Ft. Myers on a crab. Like a 30# bluegill on steroids

Off Topic / Saying Good-Bye to the UP
« on: August 19, 2015, 01:24:34 PM »
We're headed out tomorrow AM, pointed toward Florida. Our only son, daughter in law, and grand daughter live there, so some good grandpa time coming. We first moved here full time almost 15 years ago from the Flint area, had a great run. Met tons of really good people, made some close friends, and at last count, shot approx. 100 deer and caught 100,000 fish. Or about that many. We vacationed here prior to that and have enjoyed all of our time here. Had a lot of fun on this site over the years, will send along a picture of a grouper, tarpon or shark occasionally. We know that our little piece of paradise, with the orchard, woods and river will always be the "our greatest home ever" along with the UP in general. Thanks for sharing it with us for a bit. On to the next adventure. Frank & Esther Schultz  :thmb:

Same as the Coast Guard wears, flotation and hypothermia protection, great for snowmobiling, ice fishing, or early/late open water in a boat. Lowest I found on line was $450+, great shape $150.
Also Lyon MSS-2 Tool Chest. Professional quality, great for a shop or home garage. Ball-bearing drawers, adjustable dividers. Has wheels as well as fork pockets.  About 42H, 30W, 28D (Pretty sure these are around $2000 new),  $300.

Bark River Schools. PM if interested, must see to appreciate

Ice Fishing / Not Really Ice Fishing
« on: February 14, 2015, 09:32:00 AM »
---but we did have ice in our drinks. Good day on the Gulf of Mexico, out 12-16mi. 5 guys fishing, they cleaned 180 fish including 8 keeper-sized red groupers. Probably threw back another 100 fish, undersize stuff and out -of-season gag groupers, including some real tanks.  Everybody brought home about 15# of filets--snappers, grunts, triggers, and the reds, good stuff.

Hunting / Trapping / Youth Hunt Smile
« on: September 22, 2014, 08:40:02 AM »
For the 3rd year in a row, good friend Mike Borman brought out his young son Joey for the youth hunt, and also for the third time, harvested a dandy buck. Esther and I get a much bigger kick out of sharing these experiences than shooting our own deer. But, we enjoy that too! grin() They were watching 7 does eating up my profits on Sunday evening, and watched this buck getting chased out of the adjacent field by an even bigger buck. When he started nosing around the does, Joey made a good shot with his Grandma's .243.

Classifieds/Buy/Sell / Yearly Apple Wood Offer
« on: September 18, 2014, 08:45:07 AM »
If any of you can use some good, aged apple wood for your smoker, I have a great deal. All you want for free. If you like fresher wood, I can point out some trees I'd like to take down.  I will also have some great apples coming on within a few weeks, and deer apples should be around soon. I'm a few miles from the Island Casino west of Escanaba.

Off Topic / Unusual (?) Sighting
« on: September 06, 2014, 09:14:06 AM »
A little background---I have a lot of eagles around here, N. Menominee Co. Have had as many as 9 on a salmon gut pile, Bald, Golden, and young ones of both species are used to getting a snack or two around here. Cleaned some walleyes the other morning, had 3 bald plus an immature eating the leftovers. Next day we had the HUGE rain come through, had standing water in a low spot in my yard for a while. A few hours later, I saw a mature bald eagle standing in the spot where the water had been, dipping its head up and down. Got the binocs, and sure as heck, it was eating worms, lots of them. I figure the water must have drove them up? The eagle was out there a good 15 minutes, maybe 100' from my front window, no doubt what it was doing, looked like a giant robin. Then an immature landed, they fussed around a little, then both took off. I get a kick out of watching them, they are certainly not tame, but not too jumpy either.

Off Topic / Deer Smash

Hit one last night, pretty good front end damage to my truck. I'm sure there is plenty of experience of that here on this board. Any suggestions before I deal with insurance on Monday? Truck is a loaded 2004 Silverado 4WD, every option, and super clean, only 78000 miles, bought new. I'm real close to 65, and this is the first car accident I've ever had. No real idea of body repair costs, know they are high. Looked at NADA stuff, no way in hell I'd sell the truck for some of the prices I see there. Appreciate any thoughts, Thanks, Frank
