Trout/Salmon / Fathers Day fishing a day early
« on: June 16, 2014, 07:37:54 AM »
Son took me to the Driftless for Fathers Day on Saturday.  The Driftless is the South West corner of WI and the states trout Mecca.  Left after work on Friday and spent the night in Fennimore at Napps Motel.  Ripped my waders crossing a barbwire fence before we even got on the water.  First stream was almost boiling with surface activity.  Threw every thing at them, nothing on dry's. Next pool switched  to subsurface and started catching fish.  Left and went to another stream, some guys were camped at the middle.  Last stream of the day was an old reliable.  Had a great time.  Just about the end, someone had walked in from the bridge and was fishing in front of us in the best pool.   UHHHRg!  Talked to the guy and they did not catch anything??????  They left and we fished it with flyrods and pulled a few fish, but not what we were expecting.  All in all a great day.

All the streams around me are still frozen.  Not looking good either with all this cold weather.  Streams south of me have  lots of shelf ice.

Hunting / Trapping / Venison Backstraps (Dad calls them Heart Attack Rolls)
« on: November 13, 2013, 08:39:09 PM »
Thought I would share

Deer backstrap.
Bacon- thin sliced and cheap
toothpicks
cream cheese
Kikkoman terakyi-soy sauce marinade
garlic powder (not garlic salt!)
pepper
pepper-Jack cheese- thin slices
1 link of deer sausage- cut or shredded into fine pieces. (I use Jimmy Dean Hot)
Jalapenos- remove seeds and cut into slivers
onion- Cut into slivers 1in long
meat tenderizer mallet

Lay the backstap out and cut 3/4 in filets.

Take a meat tenderizer and beat until the meat is flattened out to the size of a softball.

Now dip the meat into a shallow dish of the Kikkoman marinade. Then dust with garlic powder and pepper.

Now sprinkle some of your shredded deer sausage in the middle.   (I brown sausage and melt cream cheese together and add with spoon)

Now spread cream cheese on one entire side of the meat. The more the better.

Add your onions and Jalapeno slivers. I usually us 1 or 2 Jap. slivers and 2 or 3 onion slivers.
Now take one side of the meat and roll it all up like a sushi roll.
Wrap the roll in bacon and secure with toothpicks.
Now cook on the grill until the bacon is cooked like you like it.
About five minutes before you think they are completely done add the slice of pepper jack cheese to top of each roll and let melt.
Remove and cool for a couple of minutes (the cream cheese will be very hot)
and enjoy.

Trout/Salmon / WI Southwest corner Fly fishing
« on: September 24, 2013, 06:39:38 AM »
Finally got to break in my new Grady Bamboo rod.  Had a great trip and managed 70 fish between the two of us.  Did, briefly, have a 20+ inch brown on before he came unbuttoned.  Fish were solid 14" fish.  Len pointed us to the WF Pine.  Napps Motel was good to us and reasonable.  Not much surface activity, but did get a few on top.  Here are a few pics from Saturday.  Last pic is of my friends Rick's first fish in the Driftless this year.

Trout/Salmon / June 8th and 9th Driftless trip
« on: June 11, 2013, 05:05:19 PM »
Stayed at Country Gardens in Soldiers Grove on a friends recommendation.  Very nice and the Onion Chicken BBQ pizza was excellent.  Fished Richland county and a couple others.  Had a great day Saturday.  Son and I had 45 to net on Saturday.  On Sunday had 7 or 8.  Went to quite a few streams before we actually fished on Sunday.  Lots of people out.  Had tippet problems and lost a really nice fish 10 feet away.  Knots were pulling out of tippet.  Had Curly cue on the ends when examined.  Tried Clinch and improved Clinch, lubed with both spit and even tried river water.  One stream caught some really big chubs, like 10".  Michael broke in his Graduation present correctly with lots of fish landed on his new Bamboo rod.  Had about 10 fish from Dries.  Stimulator and Royal Coachman and yes, the Hippy Stomper.  Running a tandem rig, the Pink Prince was the fly of the day.  Preferred over the Squirrel.  Almost stepped on a Fawn while walking to the next hole.  Saw Mama not far away

Trout/Salmon / Sons First flyrod fish
« on: May 14, 2013, 06:45:31 AM »
Took my son on his first Driftless trip Saturday.  The Driftless is the Southwestern corner of WI with the best fishing you will have in WI.  Despite the highwind had a great day.  Some serious Father/Son bonding time.  He loves flyfishing.  Caught his first flyrod fish, on the stream I caught my first Flyrod fish, with the same rod, which is my Grampa's.  We ended up with 33 fish for the day between us and he could not shut up about how much fun he had on the 4 hour ride home.  Great day.  He did very well, losing only about three flies to trees and what not.

Trout/Salmon / Trout stream fishing advice
« on: March 11, 2013, 07:33:31 AM »
When you get to a big pool or a long run in a stream, how do you fish it?  Cast to the front of the pool and then take the hooked fish through all the others in the pool or work your way from the back to the front?  If multiple fish in the pool, will they get spooked if you drag a fish through them?  I know everyone likes to cast 40-50 feet, but what about the fish that are 20 feet away?

We have about 10 guys that we are planning an ice fishing outing in Febuary.  Can anyone recommend a lodge that can fit us all, or a house rental.  Would be Thurs, Fri, and Saturday nights.  Not sure of exact dates.

Mike
