Ice Fishing / Re: Inland lake ice thickness?
« on: December 10, 2017, 03:04:26 PM »
For what it's worth, the whole north end of LBDN iced over in the last couple days. Good ice making weather all this next week! They'll be out there for sure by this coming weekend.

Pics are looking E and NE from the Kipling access, and E from Public Safety.

Well, it's that time of year, again!

Just looking for some ice reports from the inland lakes. Had several people heading out this weekend. Mostly up near Gwinn and Iron Mountain areas. Haven't had any reports back, yet. Anyone have any good info for me?

Better to have it and not need it, than to need it and not have it.

Sold pending payment

Walleye / Re: Any recent walleye report?
« on: November 13, 2017, 11:12:55 AM »
Only talked to a few fishermen this weekend, but overall, the reports were very good. Night bite has been typically the best time, but the morning bite has been unusually good, too. Deep Husky Jerks, Smithwick Top 20's, and Reef Runners have all been good producers. Purples and gold have been some of the better colors. Sounds like good numbers of fish over the slot. Also, lots of pike, so be prepared to donate a few baits.

Good luck out there!

Finally starting to get a few walleye reports from the upper part of the bay. Guys are pulling crankbaits after dark. Water is around 45 degrees. One group I talked to today said they landed 9 fish, up to 27 inches. The other group said they got 4 walleyes and about a dozen pike. Group that just left said they got a couple walleyes and a pike before their trolling motor died.

If you can put up with the weather, you'll probably put a few fish on the deck.

Lake Michigan / Re: Time for big pike
« on: October 19, 2017, 12:02:08 PM »
We've never tried really big suckers, just the basic 4 to 6 inch ones under a slip bobber.

We mostly stick to two main style of lures for trolling - 1 to 2 ounce spinner baits, and large shallow running crankbaits. Northland Bionic Bucktails are one of my favorite spinnerbaits. 7 or 8 inch Grandmas, Jakes, and shallow Depth Raiders are all good cranks.

Very few people fishing right now, so we are getting few reports, (most of the locals have switched to hunting mode.) Still, we've had a few good reports on the night bite, between Ford River and Bark River, trolling crankbaits. Good numbers and bigger fish. The was a report on Lake Link from this past weekend that said fair numbers, but mostly undersized fish.

Good luck if you get out.

Lake Michigan / Time for big pike
« on: October 07, 2017, 04:23:24 PM »
Today's conditions are screaming "big pike time!" Overcast, south wind, falling barometer and water temps. I know if I was feeling better, that's what I'd be doing, right now. Find yourself a good weed bed and start trolling some big, musky sized spinners or crankbaits. This is one of the best times of the year for a shot at a 40+ inch slimer!

Speaking of big slimers, my dad put his good friend Max Hurd on this 41 inch pike back in September. His biggest one ever! Got it on a sucker minnow under a slip bobber in the Escanaba harbor. After a few quick pics, it was released.

Nice one, Max!
