Again for 2017, SSFA members and other boat Captains have stepped forward to dedicate their time, effort, and money to support this very worthwhile effort.  A great big THANK YOU to all the Captains on this list.  No doubt our Veterans appreciate your efforts.

That is a great and well deserved "thank you" Andy.  Personally, I don't think we can say enough to recognize all of the boat Captains who so freely give their time, money, and effort to participate in this event.

Many of the veterans who participate with us in this event still deal with PTSD in one form or another.  This is fairly long, but if you have the time I recommend you read the following article.  It will provide some insight into the post-war life of a Viet Nam veteran from northern Wisconsin.

Thanks again to everyone.

If there can be some positive news, this might be a bit of it.

Lake Superior / Re: SSFA take a vet fishing day captains needed

Wow.  Great effort with the volunteer captains.  We are now up to 39 boats with a capacity of 79 vets fishing (up to 10 in wheel chairs).  We have boats coming from as far as Rudyard and Escanaba too.  If you aren't already on the list we can use your help.  If you are on the list, please have a look at it in the SSFA Section and see if there is anyone you know that has a boat and might be interested, and is not on board already.

Thanks again to all participants.  This is an amazing community event.

Trout/Salmon / Re: Planer boards

Church Walleye boards for me too.  Had a set of the TX44's and got rid of them.  They pull great but too much trouble getting them back to the boat, especially by inexperienced anglers.

A note of caution regarding new TX 44's.  Fished with a friend recently and he had just bought 4 of them.  When setting the line behind the pin while fishing, 3 of the pins popped loose and the springs and retainers were lost.  Never had that happen before.  Don't know if the retainers were defective, or if the slots in the pins were the problem, but very disappointing.

Thanks John and Jamie.  That is an extremely successful event and very generous donations.  Our community and it's Veterans are indeed fortunate to have giving folks like you and Jamie.

Uploaded the 2015 Veterans Fishing Day video to YouTube today.  Thanks to all the boat captains, crew members, and all the committee members and volunteers for putting on such a hugely successful event.

Best wishes for 2016.  Mike

I have a Smoke Hollow lp gas smoker from Gander that is now extra.  Probably 3 or 4 years old, not used much, and kept indoors.

Interesting article in the Free Press.  I last fished salmon in Detour in 2004 for the same reason.

Great report Mylan on a great event.  A good job and a good time was had by all.

Photos  :usa:  I need photos from the event to construct a video of the event similar to the one from last year.  Several individuals have sent me pictures of the boats in the parade so we are in good shape for those.  But pictures taken on boats, of fish, smiling faces, action photos, etc. are in short supply, as are smiling faces at the pig roast.  I can copy photos that you post here on UPA, but they end up being of rather poor quality saved in that fashion.  Much better would be to send them directly to me at either mpaluda@chartermi.net or yooperdad@gmail.com so I can include them in the 2015 video.

Thanks again to all boat Captains for making this event such a huge success.

South Shore Fishing Association / Veterans Fishing Day Coming Soon
« on: September 07, 2015, 11:59:07 AM »
Next Sunday, September 13th, is the date for the 2nd Annual SSFA Veterans Appreciation Fishing Day here in Marquette.

A huge "Thank You" goes out to the 38 boat Captains who have volunteered to participate in this years event, and to the members of the committee who have put it all together.

A few reminders too:  Captains and volunteers meeting Saturday, 6 PM at the Elks.  And finally, a request to all boat Captains to get a few good pictures of your Vet crew and fish they catch so I can do another YouTube video of the event.  Here's last year's video.  It's Ok, but can be better with more pictures.

MAK, all the publicity and effort from SSFA members has paid off.

We now have 83 apps from Vets and I just added another boat Captain (Yoda coming all the way from Rudyard) this morning.  Unfortunately, 83 exceeds our capacity and we are going to add some of those to the top of the list for next year.  This such a great event I'd put money on getting 100 or more apps next year.

A huge THANK YOU to all the Captains and Vets Committee Members who have volunteered to show their appreciation to those who have served for our freedom.

"Hooah" for you Army and Air guys.  "Oohrah" for you Marines.  And "Hooyah" for you Coasties and Navy guys.   :usa:
