Lake Superior / Re: Speaking of the fall SSFA tourney
« on: January 22, 2015, 08:49:29 PM »
There were a few ideas thrown around,,,Morning or afternoon wouldn't matter a bit to shore crew I wouldn't think, more the folks who would need time off from work. We/I am open to whatever works for participants and will use vacation time to make sure it happens. This is why we need input from the members of SSFA and those who want to see events like this happen to participate in some way, even if its only through these forums. I sincerely hope others chime in on this and express their desire to participate and what works for them. My thoughts would be to still recognize participants at the captains meeting regardless of when the event is...

I think this is a great idea, and Mike, Thank you for your generosity and support. I would certainly do anything I could to make this happen and would love to see some others step up as well. I know there will be a lot of interest. My thoughts were to attempt to have it Friday afternoon and do the awards at the captains meeting. Would be a great way to get some recognition to those who participate in it. I really hope to see some interest, and will do anything I can to make it happen. Ive got a good idea Superior Sun and Sniper would participate, and I think the Sea Angel would be able to assemble a crew as well.

The first meeting of the Fall Tournament Committee went very well. There was a consensus among members that there have been some great strides made in the last couple of years and this year will bring a smooth transition into a more "turn key" event. That said we are still looking for new thoughts and ideas from SSFA members. The tournament committee is in search of at least 2 new members, and a chair person. Anyone interested in playing any role in the planning of the event is welcome, no contribution is too small.
Our next meeting will be on Wednesday February 25th at 6:30 pm at the Marquette Elks Lodge located at the intersection of Front and Bluff St's in Marquette.
All are welcome to attend and contribute and your efforts will not go unnoticed. This year we are throwing around the idea of a "pre-tournament" tournament for women and the kids. There was some discussion of this last year and tonight as well. We would appreciate the input of the ladies in the fishing community and welcome your contributions. Hope to see some new faces at the next meeting and welcome input from the members as well.

Was there myself a little over a year ago, one of the toughest things Ive ever had to do. in the end it was what was best for her as her condition was not going to improve, I had to help her in and out of the house and she wasnt able to stand on her own. The vet explained it the only way that has brought me any comfort "its the last gift we can give them after all the gifts they have given us, a peaceful and quiet end"

The 2014 SSFA Fall Tournament is in the books. 48 teams comprised of 165 people signed up for this year's tournament.  There were multiple teams that came in from outside the area and we thank you very much for participating in our tournament. The event began Friday night with a Captain’s Meeting at the Marquette Elks Lodge. The event was organized and run by the Fall Tournament Committee who put in many hours and brought some new changes to the Tournament. We all enjoyed great company, great food and drinks, and awesome raffle prizes thanks to the generosity of our sponsors and members. The Fisherman of the Year award, created in memory of Joe December and Neil Green was presented to Mylan Koski during the Captain’s Meeting. Mylan has been a driving force behind SSFA for many years and we will be lucky to have him continue supporting the organization.

On behalf of the 2014 Fall Tournament Committee and SSFA Board of Directors, I'd like to thank all of the teams, volunteers, and especially all of our sponsors  for participating and supporting SSFA. If you are an SSFA member and are interested in being a member of the 2014 Fall Tournament Committee, please contact anyone of this year's Tournament Committee Members an SSFA Board Member, or me anytime. We are always in need of volunteers and whatever amount of time or energy you can contribute will make a difference.

In addition to the usual suspects of raffle items available at the team meeting this year please come prepared for a couple of Blitz raffles. Thanks to the generous contributions of our corporate sponsors we will be raffling off (in a stand alone fashion) a Scotty 1116 ProPack down rigger, and 2 very high end LED spot lights one of which retails for over $1,000. Look forward to seeing everyone on Friday night. Blitz raffle tickets will be sold in a limited time frame for $5-$10 per ticket.

There seems to be some confusion surrounding the rule changes to live release this year, there was also a mis-print in last weekends mining journal regarding the rule change. Changes to live release this year are as follows:

A boat may weigh as many fish as they would like in the live release category, however, for the purposes of rank only the largest 6 fish of each species (salmon/trout) will count.

Teams must not exceed the maximum possession limits. i.e.  If team has four people, you can only have 20 fish on the boat.
(dont attmept to come in and weigh more than the possession limit per license)

Another change for this year, rather than limiting the number of people per boat to 4 as in years past we have changed the rules to limit the number of lines to 12. This was done in an effort to encourage more participation on each boat.

If you have any questions regarding these or any other changes please contact a tournament committee member. All changes and rules will be discussed Friday night at the Team meeting at the Marquette Elks Lodge on N. Front St.

Parking was a concern when the tournament committee took this decision into consideration. The City of Marquette is required to allocate "X" number of parking spaces for boaters using the ramp. In years past, including last year, there has been some type of activity going on in Lower Harbor the day of the tournament. The past few years that has been Beer Fest.

There will be a shuttle service running between upper harbor and lower the day of the tournament and should tournament participants prefer to utilize upper harbor they will be able to use the shuttle and not have to move their boat.

It would be a VERY GOOD idea to leave a crew member standing in your spot as you retrieve your boat from the lower harbor ramp following the tournament. We are also working on other areas for parking for those who will be trailering. Further details will be posted as arrangement's are made and this will also be addressed at the team meeting.

This year’s Marquette Bay Fall Classic will be held on Saturday, August 23rd. We are pleased to announce a partnership with The Marquette West Rotary group. This year’s tournament headquarters will be in Mattson Lower Harbor Park in conjunction with the activities of Harbor Fest. There will be bounce houses available for children the day of the event, as well as live music and other events. Food and beverages will be available for purchase from local vendors the day of the event and Friday, August 22nd. For a full list and schedule of activities please visit http://marquettewestrotary.org/harbor-fest/

We are working on purchasing “advanced” tokens for beverages from Marquette West Rotary; further details will be posted here as well as contact information for purchasing. This is something available only to tournament participants and family members and is a courtesy being extended to SSFA by the Rotary group. Please remember although there is no admission required for entry to Harbor Fest there is to be no “carrying on” of alcoholic beverages. Wrist bands will need to be obtained from either a SSFA tournament committee member or a member of Rotary if you wish to purchase alcoholic beverages. Rotary is asking for a $1 donation for each wrist band.

SSFA will have a tent set up inside the grounds. Weighing of live fish will take place on the “Wall” next to the SSFA tent. Maps and directions for weighing of live fish the day of the tournament will be made available at the team meeting on Friday, August 22. Catch and keep coolers will also be collected on the wall that afternoon. Please remember to leave a member of your crew with your cooler as well as your team number. Anyone not fishing is welcome to stop by tournament headquarters throughout the day.

The tournament committee is also looking for volunteers; extra help is needed at the beginning and end of the tournament. Helping out during these times DOES NOT mean you cant fish!!! Please contact a tournament committee member if you are interested in volunteering.

The “Team Meeting”, formerly the captains meeting, will be on Friday, August 22nd at the Marquette Elks lodge located at 127 N. Front St downtown Marquette. The Elks is just south of the Land Mark Inn and on the West side of Front St. Parking is available on street as well as the parking lot West of the building.

For further details please contact a tournament committee member.
