Any luck this summer Mike? All that I have done is fish for pike and pick berries.

Ice Fishing / Re: Stupid Ice Fishing Question: Do pike bite at night?
« on: December 13, 2016, 10:03:46 AM »
I usually get on the ice and set tip ups about an hour prior to daylight. One time at Cedarville I had just put the third tip up in the water and the first one went. I hooked a nice pike and while fighting that one another tip up went. Before it was daylight I caught 2 keeper pike both 30 inches long.

I tried Saturday but backed off when the ice was cracking too much. This weekend should be better.

Trout/Salmon / Re: Steelhead
« on: November 29, 2016, 01:59:14 PM »
I don't think that the Lake Huron waters have cooled down very much. These warmer than usual days and southern winds are not helping very much. The river water is plenty cold enough to attract steelhead but if the lake is too warm they are hanging out where they can find the colder water. Last year was similar and there was not a good push of steelhead until December. I am still seeing a few bug hatches so they might be pigging out on bugs and ignoring the spawn. I have seen them do that many times. Last year the fall steelhead that I kept were full of wigglers, crayfish, and minnows.

Trout/Salmon / Steelhead

Is it my imagination or for some reason or another are the steelhead staying out in the lake this fall? I have had some luck but it has not been a good fall fishing for river bound steelhead. Has anyone had good catches of steelhead?

I am comparing apples to apples on the two restoration projects going on in the Great Lakes Region. Wolf Restoration and Lake Trout Restoration. What I find that is common to both projects is that they both involve the USFWS which has hundreds of employees working on behalf of wolves or lake trout. There is no final number on when either project will be completed. I did a college internship (LSSC) 1982 at Pendills Creek lake trout hatchery and back then they were talking lake trout restoration. So between then and now they have planted over 100,000,000 lake trout and are still working on lake trout restoration. Lake trout restoration is a failure at best or it provides lots of job security for the USFWS employees at the expense of fishermen who don't want them. Today between Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Michigan there are 4000 to 5000 wolves which are protected and paid for by hunters. Their numbers grow almost every year and nobody knows when they will be restored. I just wonder if the salmon ever disappear will the USFWS plant 100,000,000 of them to get a restoration program going?

Lake Huron / Re: Calling all Fishermen
« on: October 13, 2016, 10:09:01 AM »
Most of the guys that used to fish the straits hard sold their boats including myself. Many of us were dropping $100 or more per week on gas and gear. When it was not worthwhile anymore we bailed. It gets pretty frustrating spending that kind of money and catching lake trout. This has to be putting the hurts on the DNR budget. They are the ones that want to sacrifice salmon and keep planting millions of lake trout. I think that it is a very poor decision on their part. Right now I spend my summers fishing for pike and walleye. I am having some 30 fish days and I enjoy catching fish over watching rigger rods doing nothing. In the fall and winter I fish for my silver fish, I hammer the steelhead in the winter so that makes up for the loss of salmon in the summer. I still miss it though.

Do you have to boat them? I would try surf fishing off from the streams west of Brimley. I have caught a variety of salmon and trout there.

Trout/Salmon / Re: Anyone else see this?
« on: October 06, 2016, 11:18:17 AM »
The DNR always talks about the lake trout recovery effort. What are they attempting to recover? The original native lake trout have disappeared from Lake Michigan 40 years ago (Mackinac Lake Trout). The lake trout in the great lakes today are as invasive as everything else. They can afford to go a couple of years without planting lake trout as they are a put and take fish anymore.

Usually when the kings have empty stomachs this time of year they are on the move so that might be a good thing.

Nice to see that some kings are moving into the area. There should be a couple around in the streams in a couple of weeks to fish for. I will have to break out my collection of flatfish and give it a try.
