Lake Superior / Questions

Those guys who appear to be anchored in the harbor, and in front of the rivers. Are they jigging or what? What they using?  For salmon and lakers? Better then trolling early in the year?

Min size boat for going out to the rock?

Lake Superior / My rookie beginnings
« on: September 17, 2007, 11:20:23 AM »
I went out twice this year on two other boats. With some very nice guys willing to take a rookie along. Thanks to Take Three and Dan from UP Offroad. Got a very basic idea how things work.
I only have a 17 foot boat. So was real nervous and not in a big hurry to try the big lake. But bought a couple of riggers and a couple of poles and other needed stuff. So last week before the big wind a guy from the shop here and I dumped an afternoon and went out for some education. Had some problems with getting twice as much fishing line out as rigger cable. Big loop of line. Since then Ray straightened me out. But managed to haul in a couple of lakers. Managed to stay out too late, with not knowing the lake and no GPS. Had to hurry in before it got too dark. Probally made some other fishermen mad flying back to the harbor in fear of getting stuck out there in the dark. Got scolded by the Coast Guard for no nav lights on. But I deserved the scolding. Learned afterwards that even though I caught fish I was doing it wrong. Useing dodgers with spoons. Ray straightened me out again.

So went out and got two more poles, a couple of rod holders, some dipsy divers and ready to try four poles.

Went out the 15th with the wife. Learned my partner from the last trip don't know how to tie knots very well by losing a fish, and missed one other. Gave the wife a face full of water on the way in, she was already cold. 3 foot waves and a wake from another boat sent my boat airborn. Wife said she knew she was in trouble when she heard me say hee yaa.

Went out the 16th again with the guy from the shop. Found a boat stuck on the white rocks, out of fuel. Played tow boat for 45 minutes or so. Of course marked hundreds of fish while towing. Couldn't tow very fast. Didn't want to put too much pressure on the little eye bolt made for pulling a skier. Didn't think on the big lake was a place to test how big of a hole ripping out an eye bolt makes in a boat.

My partner lost the first fish by trying to horse it in right at the boat. But still managed to get three lakers and three salmon. Dipsys paid off that day. Got in before dark so not to upset anyone. Fish couting lady asks how we did. Told her. She asks what kind of salmon? I say I don't know, I am a rookie. But felt better when she didn't know either.

Didn't know what to do with the eggs. I figuired someone wants them. Found a guy to take them today.
