Lake Michigan / Salmon down 75%

Interesting article in the Free Press.  I last fished salmon in Detour in 2004 for the same reason.

South Shore Fishing Association / Veterans Fishing Day Coming Soon
« on: September 07, 2015, 11:59:07 AM »
Next Sunday, September 13th, is the date for the 2nd Annual SSFA Veterans Appreciation Fishing Day here in Marquette.

A huge "Thank You" goes out to the 38 boat Captains who have volunteered to participate in this years event, and to the members of the committee who have put it all together.

A few reminders too:  Captains and volunteers meeting Saturday, 6 PM at the Elks.  And finally, a request to all boat Captains to get a few good pictures of your Vet crew and fish they catch so I can do another YouTube video of the event.  Here's last year's video.  It's Ok, but can be better with more pictures.

South Shore Fishing Association / Vets Fishing Day Poster
« on: July 16, 2015, 02:21:43 PM »
This poster will be going up at various locations in Marquette County.  It would be most helpful if UPA members would print a copy and put it up at your places of business and employment.  Also, we are running behind in getting adequate boat Captains for the event.  Please contact me, Mylan, or one of the other committee members to get added to the list.  So far we have the capacity for 30 Vets and we would like to get to 70.

Thank you.  Mike

Good grief.  I suppose the city leaders will find a way to blame the City Police.

Lake Michigan / Water Level
« on: May 26, 2015, 11:35:29 AM »
Took the camper to Fairport yesterday to set it up.  I knew the water levels were up, but had no idea just how much.  Amazing change.

Off Topic / Cormorants
« on: April 10, 2015, 12:07:37 PM »
Just received this note from a friend in Houghton.  I assume it is accurate.

Another ALERT!! The Audubon Society has filed a law suit regarding cormorant control in Michigan. Their goal is to eliminate ALL control measures, which include egg oiling and culling of adults. Cormorants have and can have devastating impacts on fish populations in many areas in Michigan. The closest is Bay de Noc.. MDNR wildlife and fisheries biologists do not want to eliminate cormorants, but rather reduce their numbers. It is a matter of resource allocation…. how much of the forage base and game fish do we allocate to cormorants.

I will personally oppose everything Audubon says and does now and in the future. Remember the mourning dove proposed hunt, where they lied in their ads? Even the Copper Country Audubon opposed the mourning dove hunt, which did not affect the UP and was based on emotion and not science. Now they want us to support them on the cell tower location on Brockway! Not me! Same deal with the cormorant control…..based on emotion and not science. Pass the word!!

FYI..… Copper Country Trout Unlimited is partnered and aligned with the Audubon Society. That makes two anti groups they are associated with!

Buying Happiness

What a great event yesterday.   :usa:  Thanks again to all the boat captains for their generosity and caring attitude, the volunteers, the City, and to the members of SSFA and all they did before, during, and after this event to make it happen.

I'm volunteering to gather photos and video clips from the event, fishing, catches, the parade, the pig roast, or whatever else you care to make available.  Digital versions can be emailed to me at mpaluda@chartermi.net.  CD versions can be mailed to me at Mike Paluda, 14 Marquette Drive, Marquette.  I'll assemble them into a video that will run 3 to 5 minutes, with background music, as a permanent record of Veterans Appreciation Fishing Day 2014.  I've done similar videos in the past and will be happy to do this memento, that is unless someone more professional than I steps forward.  Somewhere around 50 to 100 photos will be needed for the project so please dig out what you can.

Thanks again to everyone that participated.   :thmb:

South Shore Fishing Association / Veterans Appreciation Fishing Day

Only 6 weeks away!

SOLD 5-14-2014 Picked up this Grady White late in 2012 as a replacement for my old Whaler.  But thanks to Sniper, I got another outboard for the Whaler and decided to keep it. (Getting too old to crawl around in a boat setting things up.) I paid $5500 for the Grady and put another $600 in it last summer with a new wash down system.  I have aluminum tracks for it, a couple of older Walker riggers, Garmin fishfinder, and a GPS, that all need to be mounted.  The boat is still in shrink wrap at Power Sports if you care to see it.  It came with a canvas top and side curtains, which are all available too, but the top was all ripped up and not useable.  All the cushions were redone in white vinyl just before I bought the boat.  Ben checked the motor at Dockside and said it was in great shape.  With the above stuff, price is $5500.  PM or call if interested.  228-5381

Classifieds/Buy/Sell / Copper on Penn Reels
« on: April 26, 2014, 01:59:31 PM »
I got lucky for Christmas, thanks to my son and his family, and am now the owner of 2 Modified High Speed (6.2 ratio) Okuma Convector 55's for my 300 coppers for this year.

I have 2 Penn 340 GTI's, both in decent shape, and spooled with 400 yards of P-Pro or maybe Stren Braid backing, and 300 yds of 45# copper.  I think the copper is good on both reels.  To replace with new, the setups would probably run about $200 each.

I'd like $100 total for the pair ( that's $50 each ) if anyone is interested.

Off Topic / Plug for a new book - Viet Nam

"Backtracking in Brown Water" is a new book from Rolland Kidder. Rollie asked me to review it before it was published and then included my comments on the book jacket. Very cool. Got my autographed copy a few days ago.

He does a great job describing the war from the perspective of the "brown water" Navy, and in an up close and personal way, .  I was Army but did spend some time on the water, and I knew well one of the principals in his book that didn't make it home alive.
It's on Amazon here if you have an interest in this sort of reading.
