Buying Happiness

Lake Michigan / Re: Fairport
« on: September 15, 2014, 12:16:21 PM »
Fished Saturday for 5 hours, and saw 2 other boats.  We went 1 for 1, a 6# steelie, on a mag dipsy with flasher fly, down about 70'.  We ran 2 coppers, 3 riggers, and the 1 dipsy.  One of the other boats was skunked completely, 0 for 0.  No contact with the third.

Marked a lot of bait and some fish hanging around the bait pods, but no go.

There has to be juveniles around one would think and maybe there are, but were still scattered from the week of big blow.

Barb has individual pics of all the boats in the parade
That's great Burt. Haven't received very many pics yet!

What a great event yesterday.   :usa:  Thanks again to all the boat captains for their generosity and caring attitude, the volunteers, the City, and to the members of SSFA and all they did before, during, and after this event to make it happen.

I'm volunteering to gather photos and video clips from the event, fishing, catches, the parade, the pig roast, or whatever else you care to make available.  Digital versions can be emailed to me at mpaluda@chartermi.net.  CD versions can be mailed to me at Mike Paluda, 14 Marquette Drive, Marquette.  I'll assemble them into a video that will run 3 to 5 minutes, with background music, as a permanent record of Veterans Appreciation Fishing Day 2014.  I've done similar videos in the past and will be happy to do this memento, that is unless someone more professional than I steps forward.  Somewhere around 50 to 100 photos will be needed for the project so please dig out what you can.

Thanks again to everyone that participated.   :thmb:

Very nicely done Mylan.  There's no question that our veterans, me included, appreciate your efforts and your dedication to making this event a huge success.

Looking good Mike.  You are indeed fortunate to have a lady who enjoys some of your outdoor interests.  Keep it up :)

I got another batch of apps this afternoon and just got through them all and summarized some numbers for you.  As mentioned previously I separated them into 3 categories, for ease of handling.  We have exceeded our goal of 60 veterans.  Good work everybody!

Priority 1 – include all who are disabled, use wheelchairs, were awarded a Purple Heart, or was a POW
Priority 2 – none of the above but served honorably and were born in the 40’s or before
Priority 3 – like Priority 2 but born in the 50’s or later

23 vets           Priority #1     2 wheelchair users  4 care givers required         67 dinner tickets

19 vets            Priority #2                                                                                        33 dinner tickets

23 vets           Priority #3                                                                                        57 dinner tickets
65 vets total                          2 wheel chair users 4 care givers                          157 dinner tickets requested

I have started trying to call each vet to get their shirt size and to find a few details about their service.  The few calls made so far have not been very successful.  I’ll spend considerable time next week trying to make those contacts.

Boat pairings also need to start now.  Since I was walking down the vets per boat as more boat Captains committed, I can add the additional 5 in to a boat if everyone is OK with that.  We have 32 boats committed, so won’t be an issue unless someone backs out.  But no more applications can be accepted from this point.  I’ll assemble a list of the Veterans for information and for Jamie to use of the back of the program.  Jaime, please let me know what other information you need.

The next issue is to notify the veterans and the boat Captains of the pairings, and this presents a problem for me.  Some of the Captains routinely visit UPA and a general announcement can be done there.  However some do not visit UPA and many commitments  came through members of this committee.  I got the boat info from you but not contact info for most of the boats.  Here’s the list of boats.  I need members of this committee to let me know which of these Captains you will make contact with to confirm their participation and also notify them of the Captains meeting scheduled for September 4th, 7:00 PM, at the Jacobetti Recreation Room. (Jessica to confirm Jacobetti availability)  If everyone will take several and let me know it would sure help.  I highlighted a few that I know and will take care of that aren’t members of this committee.

Kathy is doing a great job with volunteers and donations.  Thanks Kathy.

Ray and Mylan were to talk this evening about the tents and commitments.  Thanks guys.

John says the Fire Department, Police Department, and Sheriff will attend the parade.  Thanks John.

This is going to be outstanding event!

Mylan just dropped off the SSFA mail with 13 more applications from veterans who would like to participate in the Veterans Fishing Day.  That brings the total to 31 now.  Many have disabilities of one kind or another, but only 2 wheel chair users so far.

Looks like the oldest was born in 1927, God bless him.

Adam, the reel calculator says you can have 300 yards of 50# P Pro, 10 yards of 20# mono, and 130 yards of 45# copper on a CV 55.  Don't know how much extra copper you want to add but the modified 6.2 ratio 55's are nice reels.

Very nice Mike.  I'm glad you and Michael are able to spend some time together like that, creating some permanent memories.

Where are the tag alders  :poke:   And must not be many bugs the way you guys are dressed.  That's cool.

When I had Walkers on the boat I measured off 60 feet on the street and then stripped the rigger to that distance and set the counter at 60.  Upon rewinding I was amazed to see the counters anywhere from plus to minus 6 to 12 feet, and each was different.  From that point on, I would make sure to do that, especially when getting ready for salmon fishing.  Maybe there's a better way ???
