For those who haven't seen it......Nice piece of work Burt, Congratulations!

By: Emily Pace, Mining Journal

MARQUETTE COUNTY -- He's only nine-years-old and already, Brandon Mellon has earned bragging rights when it comes to fishing.

"Most kids don't really get to catch that big of fish," said Brandon.

Just over a week ago, Brandon caught the winning fish, a 22.5 pound, 36 inch lake trout at the 2nd Annual Big Brothers Big Sisters Fishing Tournament on Lake Superior.

"It took a good half-hour for him to get it in," says Burt Harris.  "So he was a pretty excited young man, especially when the head of the fish came out of the water, that was unbelievable."

Burt Harris is Brandon's mentor through the Big Brothers Big Sisters Program of Marquette and Alger counties.

Although Brandon has learned a lot about fishing from Burt, it's an interest they both share; the young angler has now taught Burt a thing or two, when it comes to hooking the winning fish.

That was the biggest lake trout that my boat has ever boated," said Burt.

Not only did Brandon's catch win him first place in the tournament, it also qualified him as Master Angler, which recognizes those who have been able to reel in an outstanding size fish, based on it's length and weight.

Brandon's fish is now frozen, waiting to be mounted.

"I want to show my kids that I caught a big fish, when I was their age," said Brandon.

Brandon and Burt say they'll continue to go fishing together, but whether or not they'll come across one as big -- well, that's the lure of the sport.

Lake Michigan / Tourney

For anyone who wasn't there: Fishing went very well for the tournament. Water temperatures continue to be extremely cold, but some very nice fish were still caught. I believe they had a record number of entrants and the "board" was quite impressive. The smallest of the eight Kings on the board was 21lbs! The winning fish was a 23lb King caught by the Dreamer. The winning Trout was a 12lb Steelhead caught by none other than our resident Steely expert and all around fish guru.....Daybreak! Congrats guys! We had some dandy fish, but none that stayed on the board too long. Seems likes there was an average 3-6 fish per trip for most guys. Some had some real nice coolers, our best was eight on Sat. am. Not much of a pattern yet, Bite seemed better after first light and evenings were slow. I'm sure others will add. As always, Good tiimes!

Lake Michigan / BIG FISH Fairport
« on: July 04, 2009, 12:29:00 PM »
Went down for the night. Things are getting better with a few fish each trip out for most boats. Water is colder than it has been last couple weeks though. Now for the good news, Below are pics (although, shitty ones prolly due to few ) They do not do this fish justice and didnt' turn out like I hoped. This fish weighed in at a whopping 26 and a half lbs. THATS NOT A TYPO! 26 and 1/2lbs. What a hog. This fish was not caught aboard my boat however. The lucky angler who landed this pig was none other than the infamous, Mr. Richard Ranguette:) He's the big stud of Fairport now guys. They're out there, go get em'. JB

Hauled my camper to Fairport Sat. First one to the East of the old tin-sided barn when entering the launch driveway, stop by for a cold bubbason. Anyway, Fished Sat. eve and went 3-3  two on lead and one on a slide diver. Bad Toad, Blue Dragon Slayer, and Highline. Fished Sun. morning and had one Steely, Slide Diver (Highline again evil()).
Pretty cold down temps yet 45-47 down 50-60 ft.  The warmer water was North. Better than expected but a week or two out yet to get jumpin'. Reports were slow, the Searcher crew managed a few fish as well.

Fished Autrain this morning and had a very good 4 hours. Went 11 for 13 with 4 nice Kings and a dandy lost at the back of the boat. Also pulled in and released two Lakers over 10lbs. Seems to be pretty hot right now.

You got your work cut out for you Finook!

This is the attached info:
Here's the new world record rainbow. Caught off of Anvil
Draw, Utah side, Flaming Gorge. It's not a mackinaw or even a hybrid, but a
straight rainbow. The pictures don't lie? I've never seen a rainbow anywhere
close to that big.
