South Shore Fishing Association / SSFA "After the Catch" Social
« on: September 08, 2014, 04:54:38 PM »
Tom and Lisa Lakenen invited us to come out to Lakenenland this fall to enjoy their pavilion for an end of year get together.  So SSFA will end the fishing year with an "After the Catch" get together on Saturday, September 27th at 2 pm.  Come out and enjoy a bonfire at their beautiful pavilion fireplace. Bring your whole family and some fishing poles for the kids, I'm sure there are some bluegill left in the pond. Hope to see you there!

South Shore Fishing Association / Vets Fishing Day T-Shirts
« on: September 08, 2014, 09:32:52 AM »
We had quite a few requests for a Vets Fishing Day T-Shirt, so I'm going to place an order for more. Because of the small order size the shirts will be $8.25 each. If you are interested in purchasing a shirt please let me know. Based on people's feedback it seems like the shirts ran a bit small so if your guessing a size, I suggest going up one.

Thanks,

Mylan

South Shore Fishing Association / Veteran's Fishing Day Boat Parade
« on: August 30, 2014, 08:02:35 AM »
Most of you know by now that as part of SSFA's Veterans Fishing Day we plan to have a Boat Parade through the Lower Harbor at the completion of fishing.  I would like to encourage anyone who is not already involved in the event to come down to Mattson Park on Sunday, September 7th at approximately 12 pm (noon) to be a part of the Boat Parade and show your gratitude for what these Vets have done for us all.  At the completion of fishing for the day, the boats will gather inside the Lower Harbor break wall at noon. Shortly thereafter the boats will line up and be led by the US Coast Guard along the wall in Mattson Park.

In preparing for this event, we requested that Vets tell us a little about themselves and their military service.  Many of the letters we received were prepared by Vets loved ones or care givers.  One of the stories caught my eye and I'm anxious to meet this man and shake his hand and thank him for the service he performed for our country.  I thought I would share a bit of his story here with everyone else.

Mr. Mahlon Nichols was born in 1927, which makes him a man of 87 years young today.  Mr. Nichols joined the US Navy when he was 17 years old.  He was assigned to the battleship U.S.S. Idaho as part of a 5-inch Artillery Gun Crew.  He and his ship took part in the Battle of Okinawa and he was there in Tokyo Harbor to witness the surrender of the Japanese Empire. At the completion of his service he was a volunteer in the Sea Cadet program in Lansing, Michigan.

Mr. Nichols is one of 68 Veterans that will be our guests of honor during this event.  Many of our boat captains, first mates, and event volunteers are Veterans themselves and every one of them deserve our gratitude and appreciation for their service to our country.  So bring your wife, bring your kids, bring the whole family, your flags, smiles and come wave to the Vets as they pass by the wall in Mattson Park on Sunday, September 7th at noon.

Hope to see you there!

Greetings Captains, First Mates, and Volunteers,

Thank you for volunteering for our Veterans Fishing Day.  We are pround to say that we have 67 Veterans signed up to fish on 36 boats!  The committee has been busy for many months to make this happen and we are all excited to be a part of this great event.  One of the final things we need to do is have a Captains and Volunteers Meeting to make sure everyone understands the plans for the day.  As such, we have scheduled a Captains and Volunteer Meeting Thursday, September 4th at 7:00pm in the Recreation Room at Jacobetti Veterans Home (use the entrance in the back of the building).  We will discuss the plans and logistics for the day and provide some information about the Veterans.  Attendance is not mandatory, but we strongly encourage you to attend if you can to help make the day go as planned.

In general, the schedule for the event is as follows:

Time     Activity
7:00 am
Vets arrive at Upper and Lower Harbors, Register, Get on boats
8:00 am to 12:00 pm     Fishing
12:30 pm to 1:00 pm     Boat Parade in Lower Harbor
2:00 pm     Pig Roast at Presque Isle

If you have questions, please contact me at (906) 360-4027.

Thank you,

Mylan Koski
