We're having the absolute worst winter walleye bite I have ever seen on the bay. Not worth the trip, right now.

Perch have been fair. Mostly on wigglers around Butler's Island and around 1st and 2nd Reef.

Any change in ice with the high winds we've had? Trucks still all over?

I haven't been out but I commend Chris on an honest report.  :thmb:

The bite for walleye is slow because there are no walleye to bite....

Thanks, Brett. No point in BS'ing people. Yeah, you might get their business the first time, but good luck seeing them again when they learn you've lied to them. Can't believe how many people I've talked to this year, told them the walleye bite sucks, but they still say they are driving 2, 3, 4, or more hours to come here. There's more to fishing than just catching fish.

That said - icefishermen are nuts

Hi guys and gals,

I was just wondering if someone local could give an update on the ice conditions of the bay?  I'm hoping to head down tomorrow for a few days of fishing.  Wasn't sure what the latest warm-up and yesterday's winds did to the shore ice, etc.

Any updates would be much appreciated, thanks!

Ice is still pretty good - heard 14 to 18 inches on the upper bay over the past weekend. They were still taking trucks out over the weekend, but I would not recommend doing that. Quads and side by sides should be fine. The warm weather and rain mostly just melted the snow, and made the shorelines sloppy. Cold temps the next few days should firm things up again for the weekend https://weather.com/weather/5day/l/49829:4:US

Good luck!

Just got off ice. Couple trucks out there but only 13" where I was near center reef. 3 eyes 22-28" and lost a few. Perch were snapping earlier. Tip ups were keeping me busy so only jogged for a bit.

Here are a few pictures from the last day of the walleye/pike season.

Pic of Quinns perch and pike.

Scott said he had a 23 and 25 inch walleye and some perch in the morning.

I finally made it out on the ice Wednesday. Tried off the Gladstone harbor. Kind of eerie having the whole lower bay all to myself. Marked lots of fish, but mostly small fish. I ended up landing four walleyes that were all undersized, and lost a couple more, (including one that was likely keeper sized.) Felt good to be on the water again, watching fish on a graph, and tricking them into biting. Good fun!
