2017 Maple Syrup
« on: March 22, 2017, 08:25:34 PM »

Wasn't able to be part of the first run of the season but had my taps out since. Production has been fairly slow for me so far except this past Sunday.  Cold the last few days but looking at the forecast it looks pretty good the rest of this week and into next. I figure I will start boiling tomorrow and then should have a pretty good supply from there on if the weather stays good for sap.  I drove by a commercial outfit frequently and they seem to be having the same results that I have so far. How's everybody else been doing?

Slow!  I'm like you in that I missed the beginning but taps in since.  I'm running 30 taps and besides the one day its been pretty much nonexistent.  Saw a few bags had a few drips here and there today and other than that nothing.  I've got the sap from the first run off the pan and into a big kettle to finish off in the house tomorrow so I should know what kind of ratio I'm looking at then.

Ratio ran right about 40:1 or just a hair over on my first run.

By my count I'm getting a little better than that but I'm sure that will change.  Not much flowing last couple days for me so I punched a couple different trees and they all ran hard today.  Hope they all go the same!

Do any of you make maple sugar from your sap?

Not yet!  Seems like every year I have a friend or two that falls asleep and makes themselves some scorched maple sugar in the pan.  My day to accidentally make some is probably coming but hasn't happened yet.  Some maple candies might be next on my list.
