Unusable AuTrain Boat Launch Report
« on: April 08, 2017, 12:01:59 PM »

I received an email today that a member of the Alger County Fish and Game Alliance checked out the ramp in Autrain today.  He reports that one of the concrete slabs that was installed 10 years ago has washed up on shore so there is a 4-foot gap 16 feet wide and 16 inches deep where the stones have washed away under the concrete.  He notified some resorts in the area.  He also will be notifying Mining Journal and USFS.  His email suggests that the ramp is NOT usable.

Couldn't see the launch pad while sailing by @ 64.9mph but it appeared to be all ice chunks free this Sat afternoon. The mouth is open for small boats to river launch.

Not usable for a while

I was there Saturday and can verify this pic...the brownstone boat ramp is "kaputt" until they (whoever) fixes it. We used the river to launch...it was easy going out at the mouth the Au Train, but the motor sucked a bunch of sand up the water pump coming back in...the river is low for this time of year. Jono

Did they say it's simply a time issue for them to repair it, or do they need funds as well?

Nothing moves at quite the speed of Government......Customers (you & I)? forget about 'em, we'll fix er up later... too busy today. I'm sure a cubic yard of coarse washed gravel/stone or a few precast patio blocks would get it back in usable condition for less than $100.00.  Then they could  do a "proper" repair at a later date if the permits, paperwork, and multiple inspections don't get in the way. Sad.

The beach next to the ramp is nothing but small rocks. That hole could be filled in with materials that are available within 50 feet. Two guys could fix it in 45 minutes.

The back hoe operator who "fixed" it last time actually contributed to the issue, since he simply dropped the rocks he excavated out of the boat channel and dropped them to the right, south of the dock.  Not only does this make landing a boat on an easterly wind dicey, it deflects the wave energy onto the ramp, enhancing the erosive force that occurs on the ramp panels.

He would not build a platform with the rocks to enable him to use his boom to full capacity and drop the rocks he was removing further south along the shoreline, opting to work only off the shore's edge.

So grab a wheelbarrow and a friend with a couple shovels?
