Ultimate fillet box?
« on: July 11, 2017, 11:23:12 AM »

I purchased what I thought was the perfect box to put fish fillets in. Does this look like a three piece set to anyone else?

That's what I read Chris. They sent me the colander part only for $15.99 (and $17 shipping). I figured that 33 bucks for a really sweet fillet box was worth it. A square colander for that price is ridiculous. I talked to a customer service rep. today, it was like talking to a brick wall. He said it was the manufacturer's picture, but they sold the parts separately. They shipped me a complete set today (for 34.99 and free shipping). Once it's on it's way I will call Chase Bank and report their shady business practices.

Says its a  drain box, no mention of kit.  Part number 52616 says its the box only.

Well, would you look at that. When I first attached the link with a photo it was a pic of the three piece kit. Looks like they changed it.

Dan, Zoro can have some good prices on goods and some high prices on goods...check-out what they are asking for the three piece unit:

Rick~ That was exactly the same picture that was on the website that I ordered from, until they changed it after I complained about it. The price was $15.99.

That's an awesome idea, but I'm not dishing out that kind of coin for a plastic container.  I found this one for $8 onAmazon and it works great.

Thanks for the idea.

I have a friend who uses a commercial fish cleaning facility in Anchorage to access their vacuum sealer. He has watched and learned via his contacts with them. He now bleeds all his salmon and halibut immediately, packs them in ice-water post-catch, and drains them prior filleting. When he fillets them he makes a point of never perforating the bile duct, G.I. tract, and liver until the fillets are removed and wiped-down. If he has to rinse them he drains them and then pats them dry prior vacuum sealing. His housemate is a chef as well. She advocates hard for also using as little water as possible on fish fillets and getting it off, along with the bacterial load from the cutting board, as quickly as possible after filleting. She packs any fillets that she doesn't store via vacuum sealing in kosher salt solution in a zip-loc freezer bag.

Big difference in volume of drainage area, how many and how large a fillet load they will handle, height above the box to allow bloody water and inherent bacterial load to drain and stay drained away from the fillets, and restaurant grade plastic are the differentiators you're looking past. Sometimes the Wal-mart business model doesn't deliver...

Thanks Naptime! A couple of those boxes will be perfect for menominee fillets this fall and spring.

That was genuine Napper. The fillets are  the length of the box and there are a bunch of them. Thank  you.

My bad.  Again, great idea.  No more soggy fillets!

Naptimes box is working better for keeping raspberries in the refrigerator than anything I've ever used.
