Off Empire, just north or Platte Bay.  It was the only salmon of the night that hit, along with one laker. For some scale, Bud is 6'-5" tall.  They said it didn't run very far on the first try, but did eventually tangle-up  with the SWR on the other 'rigger!  On its way to the smoker at the Lewis hacienda eventually. I was surprised they elected to not mount it.

Over 80% of the salmon caught over there south of S. Manitou are wild origin fish... worst hatchery fish survival in Lake Michigan, just ahead of the Bays de Noc, per the CWT data.

My friend had me cut up a 29 at airport back in the day saying "you will get a bigger one"!!
He wound up being right but anytime you tip the 30 pound scale down on lake michigan that is a fish worthy of the wall!! Especially in the current fishery!

I agree, particularly since Chinook have been very sparse over there for the last three years.

I see the kewaunee / Door tournament  had several over 30# not by much but still  true 30's. 1st place pay out 10k...

Thanks, I'll pass that on to Steve (Bud's brother-in-law)!  I was curious why they didn't go take the fish in for a master angler award submission... never thought about tournament placing or position!

Steve was telling me that Bud's boat does a hard port turn whenever he releases the wheel...like when he was trying to clear rods when his daughter was playing the fish...thus the added SWR tangle!  The steering fix quote was around $500...so it remains in the system.

There was a forty pound plus Chinook taken off Muskegon this week.  Anyone have a picture of this fish?

There was a 37.75 caught off the betsie yesterday.  I know of 6 over 30 caught on the Michigan side in the past couple weeks.

Do you know if they were all wild origin fish?

Jay Wesley has already stated that they intend to keep plant rates the same in 2018 at a talk he gave with the Detroit Chapter of the Michigan Steelheaders, with another reduction decision pending in 2019. Basically the future of the Chinook stock currently rests with this year's alewife spawning effort...

Here is Vern Smith's 30lb plus Chinook. His dad, Bob, runs a charter service out of Leland.
