2012 SSFA Fall Classic Results
« on: September 15, 2012, 08:31:36 PM »

Well, after a week's delay due to weather, the 2012 Fall Classic made it into the record books.  The tournament started with the Captain's Meeting on Friday night at Marquette Mountain.  Forty one (41) teams comprised of 136 people made it to registration.  We all enjoyed great company, great food and drinks, and maybe the best and most raffle prizes of all time thanks to the generosity of our members and Corporate Sponsors.  Though I personally wasn't one of the big winners, my 13 year old daughter, who helped sell SSFA sweatshirts and t-shirts during evening, happened to be one of the lucky winners, and I can honestly say I think she was one of the most excited winners of the night when her raffle ticket number was called for the kayak.

Fast forwarding to this morning, the tournament start went off without a hitch and everyone got on the water quickly and safely.  Working shore duty I got to see a different side of the tournament, which began with multiple boats bringing in nice catches of live salmon and trout.  Excited as each team was to bring in their live release catches each team followed the no-wake speed limit from the end of the pilings to weigh in, which was both noted and appreciated by boat owners on the Fish Dock and Association Dock, so thank you everyone.  By the end of the day 16 live release salmon and 42 live release trout were brought in.  I'm proud to say that of all the fish brought in for live release I personally only saw one lake trout that did not swim off to fight another day.  However, the fish was recovered and will be enjoyed as table fare for that team.

At the final weigh in call there were only several boats left with live release fish for which some shuffling was needed by those waiting in line.  A big thank you to all the boats who courteously gave way to the boats bringing in live release fish.  All boats were offloaded in about an hour's time and the day's winners were announced shortly thereafter.  At the end of weigh in 108 catch and keep trout and 32 catch and keep salmon made their way to the score board.

On behalf of the SSFA Board, I'd like to thank all of the teams, and especially all of our sponsors for participating and supporting the SSFA and this year's tournaments.  OK, on to the winner's and some more numbers!

Congrats to the shore team that put so much effort in making sure everything went as smoothly as it did.

An a extra THANK YOU to Mylan on all the hard work and dedication that you have put forth this year not only today, but with the SSFA in general.  And last but surely not least the effort you put forth with the  MWFL this past summer. Between the spreadsheets/updated scoring and everything else that you do to make sure we have a good time, Mylan... YOU DA MAN and Thank you!!

I got to the scale just in time to see the cooler of fish being weighed for the winners of Catch and Keep Trout. That was down right impressive.

It was nice being greeted by smiles and happy people on the shore when we came in to weigh live fish. A very well run event.

Even on the water with several boats trying to fish the same spot of water went very well. I normally do not get into combat fishing situations, and have never been in a spot where I had to watch an otter boat right in front of my bow before. But no problems and all seemed to work well.

There are many fine people and great fishermen out there. I am just happy to be able to join in when I can.
Always nice to have a great crew who knows the boat, and fishes well together.

Thanks a lot to the SSFA Volunteers, board members, and shore crew.  For your first full year running the derby as a group, I think you did an EXCELLENT job.  From the Captains meeting to the weigh-in, all appeared to go smooth, and it looked like fun was had by all.  Very nice job guys, and Thank You!  It's a LOT of work!

Great tournament! I woke up at 5am in Gwinn and had to go to Skandia to get my boat and crew. So we got out a little late. We caught fish pretty much the whole time. We lost a few very large fish. I have never seen fish this big before. We did the best we ever had done 2 weeks ago during our practice run and luckily almost matched it for the tourney. We were worried about not making it back on time. I went as fast as I could for 45 minutes in 1 to 3 foot waves. After we made it past the wall I checked my phone and it was 3:00 pm. Feeeeww!
The tournament did go very smooth. Well done!
