Shed Antler hunter.
« on: September 26, 2012, 01:32:08 PM »

My son  is home with his 6 mnth old chocolate/black lab mix. Been training her on retrieves for waterfowl, grouse and shed antlers. She is doing well on fetching the antlers tossed and blind sets on antlers.Having fun with her very good natured and obediant dog. getting me back out walking a couple hours a day, she stays in close when walking open or wooded areas and comes to heel on command very impressed so far with her.

Anyone looking for sheds yet?  Been walking a little in the woods.  Thought it was too early but Got a baldy buck with the holes in his head from dropping antlers on the trail cam on new years eve and another small buck with one missing.

Would not be surprised if they are mostly dropped by now. We've seen them go earlier than this. Few years back during muzzle season, I shot a buck, got up to it and saw that it only had one antler. Trying to remember if I had actually seen 2 horns or not, I grabbed the one, to pull the deer, and it popped off in my hand. Backtracked a little, and found the other one where he had bumped into a tree before falling.

Found half of a small 8pt rack off a 2 1/2yr old that has still been hanging around the blind about 2 weeks ago. Tracked it back to him pushing around the 7pt at 5:07am on the game cam. Still waiting on the other half... I put out some bales of alfalfa to help the deer before they head out and they love the heck out of it. it also gets them weened off of the sugar beets and corn. A couple of years ago I had a real nice 4 1/2yr old 8pt cross the road in front of me right by my house with a full rack in the end of February! I can't say that I have any kind of deer yard where he was at either, but I have to say that he was doing pretty good!

I had a couple little guys that had dropped the first week of December this year.  I saw a pretty nice 8 pt (guessing 3.5 yr old) that will be a shooter next year who was dogging some does last week with both sides of his rack.  I guess you never know, we had some bucks on the farm that still had horns into mid/late March last year.
