3# Perch
« on: November 10, 2012, 08:53:22 AM »

Has anyone caught, saw shock(), or heard of one being caught in the last 20 years? I have 5 2lb'ers mounted on a stringer from lake Gogibec and have releast everything over 13" or under 8" because that's just my eater size. However I would love to get a individual mount over 2.8#. I saw a 2.15# caught at Devils lk. in N.D.and weighed a 2.5# for a guy on Gogibec. Heard a rumor that someone caught a 3# on Lake Erving in N.D. Would love to catch a 3# so I can change my handle to threesRwild before I die. Short List for a 3# all the above plus Autrain,Independence,Great lakes and Champlain in N.Y.

Used to get a lot of nice ones through the ice at Simcoe some years back. Never saw a 3 or anything too close, but 2+'s were not unusual. Not common, of course, but not rare. When there was no bag limit, the overharvest was bad, people bringing back plastic garbage cans full. Even though the local Canadian residents were not  that interested in perch for the most part, a bag limit was put in place. Had to control the slobs. Last I remember, I think (?) the limit was 50/day, could bring back 2 days limit. Might have been reduced again after that. Lake is full of fresh-water shrimp of some kind, fishing was usually in 15' or less, lots of fun. Been about 12-13 years since Ive been there, maybe it is coming back. Those trips were the most fun ice-fishing I've ever experienced.

That's a mighty rare fish, like a 15 pound walleye or a 7 pound smallmouth. There was a 16 inch, 2 pound 15 ounce fish taken here on Little Bay de Noc last winter. The perch fishing on northern Green Bay has been steadily improving over the last 10 years. It takes a while to grow fish of that size, so it's only a matter of time. Good luck on your quest.

Frank I've dreamed about Simcoe for years but wasted my trips going to Devils in N.D. instead :kick:. I got hooked back in it's hay-day and couldn't stop. I agree with TBSG about the bay(just a matter of time). Naptime's pic. is really got me regretting that choice . Thanks

The ones on my stringer are all just under 15" with the smallest 2#'s on the head and the biggest 2.2#. I don't think mine have quite the girth of Naptimes. I weighed a 2.5# for a guy on Gogibic it was a tic over 15". Gus at mapleridgemotel on Gogibic has a mount 15.3/4"that is 2.8# and saw a mount at the Hoop N Holler bar also on Gogibec about the same size. I'd guess Naptimes at 2.5# to 2.8#hard to say from a pic. great fish though. I'd vote for Gogibec or the Bays De Noc for the next 3#der within 500 miles or Simcoe. wink()

Been many years since I fished Gogebic, but, thats where my Jumbos came from for years. Almost all my fishing was done on the North end back then.  Never got one mounted but it was nothing to pull in several over 13" on a good day. "Never weighed any" I think my biggest was 17.5" but that was when I was 15.

Since then, I have had several in 14" range over the last 5 years on LBDN. Getting into a good day of 11-12"+ isn't unusual.. Biggesthere for me was 15.5".

That 17.5" from Gogebic would of had to be a 3# if it had the usual girth. I'd have loved to see it shock()! The state record (Mich.) was caught out of Independence 21" and 3.12 oz. in 1946.

Haven't heard of any perch being caught there so you must have meant walleye or snot rockets.  wink()
