2014 Maple Season
« on: March 19, 2014, 10:28:06 PM »

Does anybody have their taps out yet in the UP?  The next two days are supposed to warm up a bit, but I don't know if it will be enough to get the sap running. The extended forecast looks like maybe toward the end of next week it should start up but who knows?

We don't have our taps in yet. I'm guessing we are going to be at least a week or 10 days behind last year, but that is only a guess based on nothing more than how cold the winter has been and continues to be. Post back when you get ready to tap. Hopefully our drill will go through frozen maples. sad()

I tapped one tree on March 8 just to see if or ever one of these warmer days will get the sap going.  Not a drop as of yet.

I haven't even packed down the trails to the trees I'm going to tap this year. I think I'll do that Wednesday and then maybe tap on Thursday. If the forecast holds it looks like we may get some sap running by the end of the week or weekend.

There would have been a wonderful run of light amber syrup in Feb.

I have no time again this year therefore: Wanted to Buy One Gallon Maple Syrup. (I know I can get a gallon at the feed store is Esky, would rather buy from a UP Angler.)

I have a question for the more knowledgeable maple sap collectors on this site. What is the ideal height from the bare ground to put your taps in a tree?  With the current snow depth out in the woods they will be significantly higher than I had them last year, by at least a couple feet unless I were to dig out every single tree.  Or will I get the same production from my trees if I just place the taps high enough so the bags are not resting on the snow?

In my experience height doesn't matter especially with bags. If you use taps with hoses that run into a 5 gallon bucket, then your only concern is to make sure the hoses still reach the bucket as the snow melts away. Therefore, I usually shoot to tap about waist high, regardless of snow depth. One thing I would watch however, is to place your taps slightly left or right of last year's holes. Generally speaking, the tree will scar vertically from the healed up tap mark and may not run as strong if you would go directly below or above an old hole.

Got around to digging out my trees and am going to tap tomorrow.  Weather looks like Saturday thru Monday should be flowing.  I want to get it going early in case we have a season like we did a year or two ago where it only ran for less than a week.  I doubt it but I'll be ready.  Still damn near 3' of snow in my neck of the woods.
