Congrats.  That's a hell of a pile of jerky! 6.5 yrs old, that's well aged on the hoof.  Did your bow buck die in a river?

It is amazing what John can catch with a chicken wing.

Nice job on both. That gun buck certainly looks like he was King of his hood. They do not live that long by being dumb. But got out smarted that day.

Thanks very much, guys!  A year I'll never forget!

Did your bow buck die in a river?

LONG story short, I hit him a few inches low.  Arrow went in behind a shoulder and out behind the other, but slipped below everything I guess.  The Rage made a hell of a hole, and the bloodtrail was easy to follow.  Tracked him for a little while and jumped him up.  After seeing that bed filled with blood, we decided to come back in the morning.  At sunrise we found his bed full of blood where he layed down again, but also a few different sets of Coyote tracks that ran him out of there.  He went straight to the river, where we found him dead, hung up in a blowdown in the middle of the river.  With steep ridges and tangled nastiness all around, and no way to get a machine anywhere close, the best way to retrieve him was to float down the river from a buddies camp, load him up, and paddle him back upriver.  I'm very disappointed that I missed my mark and he suffered more than he should have, but very glad he didn't go to waste.  Truly a game of inches, and memories forever!

The gun Buck took a 30-.06 to the throat at 40 yards.  He never even quivered when he dropped in his tracks.

Wow, impressive bucks John, good for you!

30-06 to the throat is never good for life expectancy :)

Looks like the taxidermist did an awesome job of patching the hole the '06 left in his throat.................or he might have also used another cape.  Either way, that is a beautiful deer and mount, congrats!
