Maple syrup-2015
« on: March 06, 2015, 11:42:02 AM »

It's time to tap your trees if you haven't tapped already! It looks like sap is going to run next week.
My taps are going in on Saturday. Any one else making syrup this year?

Looking forward to it.  Never know for sure, sometimes gainful employment interferes.

I hope to tap this weekend.  My guess is those that are tapped now are too busy boiling to come to the computer.

Jack shit this week????  Weather was good.  Maybe the roots are still frozen.  Out of 19 taps (3 blew off the tree). I got about 9 gallons from Sunday to Sunday today.  Kind of disappointing but at least I don't have  all that sap to boil!  Next week should be better.

Boiled down 12 gallons yesterday and only got 24oz.  Another boiled down 35 gallons to 70 oz.  Sugar content is down near 1.5%.  Very strange start.

Cold summer, poor carbohydrate production from last summer corresponds with low sugar content the following spring.  Ever tap following an army worm(eastern tent caterpillar) year?

So this will be typical for the entire season or is there a chance it may improve?

My dad and I boiled 70 gallons today. I was expecting bad sugar content based on what others were experiencing, but we ended up with 6.75 quarts.  Nice color and very happy with a 41:1 production ratio for the first boil. Right around 2.4% sugar.

I was surprised too.  I have 3/4 gal jarred off of 30 gal sap.  Half way there, but out of sap now.  Need a couple of warm days.  Mines a little darker than last year but close.
