zebra mussels
« on: August 08, 2016, 04:12:42 PM »

The lake our fish shack is at is saturated with mussels with my walleye catch rate down 700% this year from 4 yrs ago. If your lake is open to the public fishermen you'll get them if you don't have em already.  More info~ http://mdc.mo.gov/wildlife/nuisance-problem-species/invasive-species/zebra-mussel-control

Downstate Saginaw is loaded with zebras also. They recently increased their daily bag limit And lessen the length from 15 to 13 inches There are so many walleye It's time to get some. Dollars And efforts in the upper peninsula also.

We did the big kayak trip on the river and I noticed as you start under the bridge there were also zebra mussels.

The drunks are gonna be wishin their mothers never met their fathers when they tip the canoes pretty soon with all the sharp mussells on the trees and rocks.

Its gonna look like a scene from jaws with all the thrashin and splashin, and zebra mussells cuttin...

I'll never wear a lifejacket again...

Decades ago a couple guys use to wade out and fish the drop-off at the mouth in the evening until dark for eyes. He said they didn't catch many but when they did they were big. Some 10# spawners were caught in the spring in the lower part of the river a couple years ago.

I've a rough cement block seawall and see lots of em and other stuff stuck to it from hatching bugs. Dragonflies can't get out when a zebra is stuck on the middle of their back. After I watched a dragonfly eat a bald faced wasp in my boat I had a new friend in the bug world.  ;D
$2,300 in camp taxes alone and we got 4 meals of walleyes and a couple perch hors devours in 2016. $600 a meal, $25 a bite, give or take. Too late in life to sell to some boozer jet skiing appleknockers and move on.

AuTrain R and Lake are back up yesterday and a given going up some more after the approx 2"+ of precip received in the past few days. Might be high tide for the opener, always fun with the launch dock with water height fluctuations this time of year and adjusting non floating docks, my personal favorite.
Lots of little black n white puddle divers in and the odd mallards.

Frost was out of the ground and I could start on getting the water up and pressurized while checking for leaks when my 2nd childhood or something kicks in I suppose. Too early and water too high to get jazzed up about it but, heat is on and tv works. Oh, new #s are on the boat and batts maintained all winter.
No geese or cormorants seen yet either.

Welcome back Al...

Hey Fred,
I see the river is full of suckers. Had me going until I saw the bugle lips on a whitehorse.
